Three Categories
Children 12 & Under
Youth 13 – 18

1. Poems must be written by Guyanese living in Guyana or in the diaspora.
2. Writers, Editors, Advisors and Members, and their immediate family members of Guyana Journal and the Association of Artists & Writers, Inc. are ineligible to enter.
3. Entries are limited to one poem per person. A Submitter will be disqualified for submitting more than one poem.
4. The poet's name, address, daytime telephone number, evening telephone number, and a brief 25-50 word biographical sketch must be attached with the entry on a separate sheet of paper. Entries in the "Children" and "Youth" categories must also include the age of the submitter, and the name of a parent or guardian.
5. Entry must be submitted (via postal mail or by hand) in an envelope, labeled clearly on the outside of the envelope as to which of the three Categories (age-groups) the entry falls into. Poems submitted by fax or e-mail will not be accepted.
6. Poems must be written on a computer or typewriter. If chosen as a winner, poem may then be submitted via email for publishing in the Guyana Journal.
7, Entries must be no longer than 24 lines, and must evoke a “sense” of Guyana – the people, places, events – or being Guyanese.
8. Poems must be original and not previously published or submitted for publication elsewhere, up to the time the winners are declared.
9. Entries must be the work of the submitters. A Submitter must be an ‘Amateur Poet’ according to the UNESCO designation: “An Amateur Poet is defined as someone who has not published a book of poetry of more than 48 pages."
10. Pseudonyms are not permitted. Actual full name must be stated.
11. Failure to abide with any of the conditions stated here constitutes an invalid entry and/or disqualified entry.

Deadline For Receipt Of Entries

• Postmarked or hand delivered by October 31 2005.
• Entries in the "Adult" Category must be accompanied by a $5.00 entry fee. ("Children" and "Youth" Categories do not have an entry fee.)
• Guyana Journal assumes no responsibility for lost, late, delayed, destroyed or misdirected entries.
• No change to an entry is allowed once the entry is submitted to Guyana Journal.
• Poems will not be returned.
• Winners will be notified by telephone, letter or email by the end of November 2005 or ASAP thereafter.
• Winners must agree to allow Guyana Journal to publish their poems, names and biographical information. Do not send photographs with entries. Winners will be contacted about a photograph at a later date and must agree to publication of same.
• The decision of the contest judges is final.

Members of the contest judges will complete the first round of judging and choose the best poems from all the submitted entries. A panel of poets and Guyana Journal writers will select the semifinalists. An esteemed Guyanese poet will choose the Winners.
